We are done, done, done with speech therapy! Whoop whoop! After a short 9 months of therapy twice a week H is now above average developmentally in regards to her speech. I mean seriously, this girl is like a parrot now and will repeat anything we say. We went from H having "significant" hearing loss, multiple infections, two surgeries and sadly being delayed about 6 months with expressive language when we started this journey.
People always asked, how do you do speech therapy with an 18 month old? We started by learning sign language (which she picked up super fast and had a large sign language vocabulary), to teaching mommy and daddy to limit words to two words at a time, then getting H to sign words, then getting H to vocalize the words. Now she can say her ABCs, talk with 4-5 word sentences, say please and thank you and tell us what she wants. I must say that now that she can talk, she's a bit bossy and sassy! I guess when you pray for something, you get what you asked for and more :)
We had a truly great experience with our therapist Kambria Souza at Learning to Succeed. But mommy is glad to have back her Thursday/Friday mornings for other fun stuff like gymnastics, barre & swim lessons. Below are some of her funny quirky sentences she says a lot now:
- "Momma/Dadda sit mooooore minute." (As she sits on top of us so we don't get up to get ready or when its time for us to leave her at bedtime)
- "Georgia, don't touch my stuff."
- "Go bye bye"
- "No I do it"
- "Georgia stop it" (As Georgia barks outside)
- When we ask H her name: "Hattie"
- "No momma/dadda sing, Hattie sing"
- She tells us "I go on air-pane to see Mickey Mouse" (After we just.got.back.last.month)
