For nearly the last 4 months we have lived at PAMF having monthly follow ups with our pediatrician, audiologist and ENT doctor. We have realized Hadley had bilateral effusions in both ears back in May leading us to find out she had hearing loss which was contributing to her lack of expressive language development. When we would talk to her and look at her in the face, sometimes it seemed like she was deaf or she would not turn her head to certain noises, yet other noises (like airplanes and Georgia barking) she heard just fine. After little to no improvement we decided to do what millions of other parents decide and we had tubes placed on Friday. Simple procedure we know, however I can work all day long supporting families as their child goes under general anesthesia when I'm at work, but when it's your own child...its a whole different ball game. Versed worked great, we loved our anesthesiologist and ENT doctor, however Hadley and anesthesia DO NOT mix well AT ALL!
Now we wait...she qualified for Early Start Early Intervention Services and Speech Therapy, which we will start in the next couple weeks. She's behind all her other little friends, but now that she can hear us and isn't under water anymore, we're confident she learn how to talk! I can't wait for her to say "NO! Daddy!" We won't have another formal hearing test for a couple weeks to see if these tubes helped her hearing!

ReplyDeleteThinking of you guys. Glad to hear that she had her tubes placed and will be able to hear better now :) A friend of ours had the same thing done and her daughter's speech became much clearer and even her tantrums less frequent.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely know about how worrisome it is to have your child under anesthesia-good thing you and Mason are a great team and could remind yourself that it was going to be okay. Will be excited to hear how her speech develops over the next period of time.
